What is positive behaviour support?

Positive Behaviour Support is grounded in the principles of behaviour therapy, also known as behaviour modification, which focuses on identifying, understanding, and changing specific behaviours to improve a person’s overall functioning. Within the NDIS framework, Specialist Behaviour Support (SBS) builds on these therapeutic foundations to provide evidence-based strategies that enhance the quality of life and well-being of individuals with complex needs. This approach involves assessing the reasons behind behaviours of concern and implementing proactive, person-centred interventions that promote skill development, independence, and meaningful participation in everyday life.

How does our behaviour therapy service assist NDIS participants?

Behaviour therapy can be a valuable intervention for NDIS participants as it can help address and manage behaviours of concern, promote skill development, and enhance their quality of life. Here are some ways in which our behaviour therapy services benefit NDIS participants:

Managing behaviours of concern

We always focus on identifying the underlying causes of behaviours of concern and developing strategies to modify or replace them with more appropriate and socially acceptable behaviours. Behaviour therapy helps NDIS participants understand the triggers for their behaviours and provides them with tools to effectively manage and respond to these triggers. This can lead to a reduction in behaviours of concern and improve social interactions and relationships.

Developing skills

Behaviour therapy aims to teach individuals new skills and behaviours that are essential for their daily functioning and independence. For NDIS participants, this could include social skills, communication skills, self-care skills, problem-solving skills, and more. By focusing on skill development, behaviour therapy empowers individuals to enhance their abilities, gain confidence, and improve their overall quality of life.

Emotional regulation

Many NDIS participants may struggle with emotional regulation, experiencing difficulties in managing their emotions and reactions. Behaviour therapy provides techniques and strategies to help individuals understand and regulate their emotions effectively. By learning healthy coping mechanisms, participants can experience improved emotional well-being, reduced stress levels, and better emotional stability.

Setting goals and personal growth

Our behaviour therapists work collaboratively with the NDIS participants to identify their goals and develop personalised plans to achieve them. This process promotes personal growth and empowers individuals to take an active role in their own development. By setting and working towards goals, participants can experience a sense of accomplishment, increased self-esteem, and a greater sense of control over their lives.

Family and caregiver support

At Achieve & Thrive behaviour therapy involves working closely with families and caregivers of NDIS participants. It provides education, guidance, and support to help them understand and implement behaviour management strategies at home and in other environments. This collaboration ensures consistency and reinforces positive behaviours, creating a more supportive and conducive environment for the individual’s growth and development.

What is included in the behaviour support process?

1

Interim behaviour support plans

These include crisis management and safely strategies. If a person is engaging in unsafe behaviours where they require immediate support, we provide interim behaviour support plans. These plans are to provide immediate and short-term assistance to mitigate immediate risk and contain response strategies.
2

Functional assessment

We begin with a thorough assessment of the participant's behaviour, environment, and individual needs. This assessment helps us identify triggers and consequences that contribute to behaviours of concern. It involves gathering information from the participant, their families, and other relevant stakeholders.
3

Positive behaviour support strategies

We focus on positive behaviour support strategies to teach and reinforce appropriate behaviours. This approach helps enhance communication skills and develop coping mechanisms. We teach new skills and provide support to assist participants successfully navigate challenging situations.
4

Person-centred planning

We have a person-centred approach, and we recognise the unique needs, preferences, and strengths of our participants. The plan is tailored to the individual, ensuring their active involvement, and promoting self-determination. The strategies we develop are aimed to promote positive behaviours and reduce the occurrence of behaviours of concern.
5

Collaborative approach

Collaboration among all involved in the participant’s life is crucial for a successful outcome. In our experience when family members, caregivers, support workers, therapists, and other professionals work together, we can implement the strategies consistently across different environments.
